Reinstatement cost assessment & capital estimation

I establish what it costs to rebuild industrial process assets — for insurance placement and sum-insured declarations. Upstream and downstream oil and gas, petrochemicals and fertiliser, and power generation from thermal to renewable.

This site is where I write about how that work is actually done: what a document set will and won't tell you, how quantities get built up, and where declared values drift from current cost.

Position

  • Rebuild cost is built up from quantities. Indexing historic capex forward is a different exercise, and it gives a different answer.
  • Almost everything that drives the cost is confirmable from the document set. The constraint is obtaining it, not reaching the site.
  • A declared value that has not been tested against current cost is an assumption with a number attached to it.

Notes

  1. Aug 2026 The constraint isn't the plant. It's the document set. What design pressures, materials and capacities can be confirmed from paper — and the narrow set of things that genuinely need eyes on the asset.
